KVM x86/x86_64: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Through Ubuntu 11.10: Here are benchmarks of Ubuntu Linux in a virtualized environment using KVM virtualization and testing every release from Ubuntu 11.10 all the way back to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

Adobe Flash Player Linux x86_64 Update Coming: Last week marked the official release of Adobe Flash Player 10.3 for Linux and other supported operating systems. Sadly, however, the Linux release was limited to 32-bit and their x86_64 Flash binary remains living in the "Square" 10.2 land. There also is no Linux video acceleration support outside of NVIDIA's VDPAU interface.

Ubuntu 11.04: i686 vs. i686 PAE vs. x86_64: At the end of 2009 I published benchmarks comparing Ubuntu's 32-bit, 32-bit PAE, and 64-bit Linux kernels. Those tests were carried out to show the performance impact of using 32-bit with PAE (Physical Address Extension) support, which on the plus side allows up to 64GB of system memory to be addressable from 32-bit machines, but is still significantly slower than a 64-bit kernel and user-space.

ioquake3 Goes Gold WIth Ogg Decoding, x86_64: Back in February we talked about a new ioquake3 engine was forthcoming that would deliver a number of enhancements, but this week that new version (1.36) has finally gone gold...

NVIDIA 180.22 x86/x86_64 Linux Driver Released: Up to this point NVIDIA had released several betas in the 180.xx driver series that introduced VDPAU acceleration support, OpenGL 3.0, CUDA 2.1, and other Linux work. This afternoon all of these new features are finally supported by NVIDIA with the release of the first stable Linux driver in this latest series...

Silverlight To Support x86_64 Linux: While Adobe doesn't offer a native x86_64 version of Adobe/Macromedia Flash for Linux, Microsoft and Novell will be offering a 64-bit edition of the Silverlight binary codecs for Linux. Miguel de Icaza had posted this information today on his blog. Will this motivate Adobe to offer a x86_64 version of its Linux Flash player to be competitive with 64-bit Silverlight/Moonlight?

Fedora 7 x86_64 Fix For ATI Driver: If you've been unable to run the new fglrx 8.39.4 driver with Fedora 7 x86_64, mmastrac on our forums has written a guide for fixing the fglrx driver with 64-bit Fedora 7. A bit of hex editing is all that's involved for this support. The 32-bit version of Fedora 7 should work "out of the box" with the fglrx 8.39.4 driver.

Ubuntu i386 & x86_64 Compared: For our last article for 2006 we have compared the 32-bit and 64-bit performance of Ubuntu. We not only used Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft but also Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn Herd 1 for comparison. This article can be read here and a discussion thread. Have a happy new year!
