Phoronix Information

Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS Released: For those living in Ubuntu's Long-Term Support (LTS) land rather than running the latest Ubuntu releases, the third 10.04 LTS release is now available...

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Released: While there is less than two months to the release of Ubuntu 10.10 and details for Ubuntu 11.04 are already emerging (it's codenamed the Natty Narwhal), the first point release to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is now available...

Packages For PHP5-GTK On Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: The Phoronix Test Suite is one of the few mainstream projects that uses PHP-GTK, a PHP5 extension that provides bindings for the GTK+ tool-kit on the desktop, for its user-interface. Unfortunately, PHP5-GTK packages can be found in very few distribution repositories even while the Phoronix Test Suite can be found in most any modern distribution...

Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS Delayed To Next Month: Canonical's Robbie Williamson has provided an update on the status of the Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS release, which is the first re-spin since the Long-Term Support release of the Lucid Lynx in April. Ubuntu 10.04.1 incorporates the package updates and minor fixes committed to Lucid since the original release.

How An Old Pentium 4 System Runs With Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10: Last October I wrote about running Ubuntu 9.10 with older PC hardware, but over this past weekend I restored an even older Phoronix test system to see how it runs with the most recent Ubuntu 10.04 LTS release and the very-latest Ubuntu 10.10 development snapshot in relation to the older Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS.

Fedora 13 vs. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Benchmarks: Fedora 13 was released last week with a number of new features like Btrfs system rollback support and support for easily using the open-source 3D NVIDIA driver, but how does its performance compare to that of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, which was released a month earlier? We have the benchmarks today from three different systems to tell you.

Mac OS X 10.6.3 vs. Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 10.04 Benchmarks: Last week we delivered the first of our Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 10.04 benchmarks to much anticipation, but now we have the results for Apple's Mac OS X 10.6.3 operating system to tack in too. In the first part of that Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu Linux performance examination, we looked closely at the OpenGL gaming performance across six different systems and a whole slew of tests.

Ubuntu 10.04 Is More Power Hungry Than Windows 7: Yesterday we published our first benchmarks of Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 10.04 that provided an initial look at the OpenGL graphics performance between these two operating systems on six different systems. Today we are continuing to compare the two operating systems as we look at the power consumption of Ubuntu and Windows on a netbook and notebook.

Is Windows 7 Actually Faster Than Ubuntu 10.04?: While Linux has long been talked about as being a faster operating system than Microsoft Windows, in 2010 is this still the case? It seems every time we deliver new benchmarks of the EXT4 file-system it's actually getting slower, recent Linux kernel releases have not been delivering any major performance enhancements for desktop users, the open-source Linux graphics drivers are still no match to the proprietary drivers, and "bloated and huge" is how Linus Torvalds described the Linux kernel last year.

On Track With Our Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 10.04 Tests: Since early November when we shared that the Phoronix Test Suite would be ported to Windows 7 we have been working it into a state where it's now possible to compare the performance of Windows vs. Linux and also Mac OS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenSolaris too.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Made It Out Today: While a few hours ago it looked uncertain whether Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (a.k.a. the "Lucid Lynx") would actually be released today due to a serious bug that caused the ISOs to be re-spun, Canonical managed to pull through and now the Lucid Lynx is officially out in the wild...

Ubuntu 10.04 Hit By Major Bug; ISOs Now Being Re-Spun: While Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is scheduled for release today, development of this "Lucid Lynx" release has not been as optimal as many would have liked. There had been many upset over Lucid's use of the Linux 2.6.32 kernel rather than the newer 2.6.33 release and the extensive back-porting that has went on, among other items to cause concern for some users.
