Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset IGP is a chipset. This product is available from Intel. The Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset IGP has been tested via the Phoronix Test Suite in the configurations listed below.
Using NVIDIA's VDPAU On Mobile Platforms: We know that NVIDIA's Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix (VDPAU) works very well for exposing PureVideo capabilities on Linux. We have benchmarked VDPAU and found it to perform very well in that under Linux it's possible to play HD videos with a $20 CPU and $30 GPU thanks to this video acceleration method.
Intel P55 Chipset Preview On Linux: This morning Intel has introduced their new mainstream desktop chipset, the Intel P55, and has brought forth the Core i5 processor family along with new Core i7 processors for use with this new chipset and socket. Intel sent us out a review kit of this new hardware so we are already able to comment on its Linux compatibility.
Intel Releases Support For New, Unreleased IGP: Last year Intel had launched the GMA X4500HD integrated graphics processor as a nice upgrade to their G3x series. Our Linux results found these chipsets with Intel integrated graphics to perform better than past Intel IGPs, but still was limited in what games and tests could run on the G43/45 hardware with the open-source Intel Linux driver stack.
New Intel IGP Appears In Linux 2.6.30 Kernel: The merge window for the Linux 2.6.30 kernel is now open and Linus has already accepted a horde of new patches for this next quarterly Linux update. Among what has been pulled in so far is the DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) support for a new Intel chipset.
Intel GMA 4-Series Support On Linux: Committed this afternoon to the xf86-video-intel driver development branch at FreeDesktop.org is support for Intel's GMA 4-Series Chipsets. The 4-Series IGPs (namely the Intel X4500) are brand new and is designed to be three times faster than the current Intel GMA X3100.
Linux On Intel's X48 Chipset: While Intel's X48 Express Chipset is not due out until the middle of March -- after having faced a few delays reaching production -- the kind folks at Gigabyte have today provided us with the Gigabyte X48T-DQ6 motherboard. This motherboard is similar to the Gigabyte X38-DQ6 that we reviewed last October, but it employs the new X48 Express MCH and the revised feature-set that this chipset brings to the hands of enthusiasts.
AMD 790FX Phenom Chipset On Linux: Back in November AMD had launched their "Spider platform", which is made up of AMD's first quad-core processor, ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics, and the AMD 7-Series chipsets. While we were quick to cover the ATI Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 graphics under Linux, today after much testing we are finally delivering our first Linux report from AMD's new 790FX Chipset.
Upcoming Intel X38 Linux Articles: Have you had your eyes on a computer upgrade with Intel's forthcoming X38 Chipset? Over the course of the next week we will be looking at Intel's new X38 Chipset under Linux and Solaris as we look at the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe and the Gigabyte X38-DQ6 (this motherboard isn't even being announced until the 10th).
Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded: With Intel recently introducing a low-power processor and Chipset architecture for mobile Internet devices, Canonical has announced they will begin working on an Ubuntu mobile and embedded project. This new Ubuntu embedded/mobile edition will not arrive until Ubuntu 7.10 this October.
AMD 690 Series Chipset: AMD has today launched the new 690 series Chipset. The AMD 690 Chipset incorporates a ATI Radeon X1250 GPU (including Avivo!) and much more for use with AMD processors. The AMD press release is available here. Phoronix will be covering the AMD 690 Chipset under Linux in the near future.
VIA CN800 IGP Launches: VIA Technologies has launched a new Chipset that supports DDR2 and PCI Express for their processing platform. The VIA CN800 IGP Chipset supports the VIA C7-D and supports PCI-E graphics, DDR2, UniChrome Pro graphics, and more. Information on today's announcement can be found here.
ATI Radeon Xpress 1250: Coming out of Canada today is the ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 Chipset. This Chipset is designed for use on Intel PCs and notebooks, and is also geared for delivering a new level of graphics performance. Another fact about this Intel Chipset is that it's the first to support ATI's Avivo (Advanced Video In Video Out).
