Phoronix Information

AMD's Catalyst Evolution For The Radeon HD 7000 Series: It used to be -- at least when using the Windows Catalyst drivers -- that within the first few months of AMD releasing new Radeon graphics hardware that Catalyst driver optimizations would deliver measurable improvements in this short span. For the Radeon HD 7000 series, which is built upon an entirely new GCN architecture, is this still the case? Here are benchmarks of all the AMD Catalyst Linux drivers that have been released this year and then benchmarked on an AMD Radeon HD 7950 graphics card.

Open-Source Radeon HD 6000 Series Still Borked: The first of the AMD Radeon HD 6000 "Northern Islands" graphics cards launched late last year, and while the open-source Linux driver support is technically there for those interested in this alternative to the proprietary Catalyst driver, the support is still largely broken.

Open-Source 2D, 3D For ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series GPUs: AMD continues to abide by their commitment to provide open-source support for their graphics cards and as proof of that this afternoon they have released their initial hardware acceleration code that supports the ATI Radeon HD 5000 "Evergreen" family of consumer grade graphics processors.

AMD's RS880 / 785G Gains Open-Source Acceleration: Back in March we shared that the open-source ATI driver had gained support for the unreleased ATI RS880 IGP. Well, the RS880 ended up being turned into the 785G due to some problems on AMD's side, but today this new, much more powerful IGP has launched. With that said, another commit made to the xf86-video-ati driver today finishes off the support.

Hard-Coded ATI RV770 Support Arrives: Earlier this week we reported on RadeonHD driver support for the RV770 with the Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 graphics cards. This support arrived within the RadeonHD driver's new AtomBIOS branch that relies upon ATI's video BIOS abstraction layer as opposed to "banging the registers" and interfacing with the hardware directly.

AMD Introduces Puma Platform: Yesterday was NVIDIA's turn in the spotlight with the introduction of the GeForce 9 Mobile GPUs and Hybrid SLI. Today the attention turns to AMD with their new announcements coming out of Computex. AMD has introduced their next-generation notebook "Puma" platform, its fastest notebook graphics processor ever, an external graphics solution for notebooks, and PowerXpress improvements...

RadeonHD 1.2.1 Driver Released: Just four days ago the RadeonHD 1.2.0 driver was released as the first xf86-video-radeonhd driver update in several months. The RadeonHD 1.2.0 driver added support for several new Radeon HD 3XXX GPUs, R500 2D XAA/EXA acceleration, and many other underlying changes.

AMD Introduces Radeon HD 3870 X2: Coming less than a week after the introduction of the Radeon HD 3400 and 3600 series, AMD has today introduced the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics card. The Radeon HD 3870 X2 combines two Radeon HD 3870 GPUs on a single PCB and are connected via CrossFire Technology.

ATI Radeon HD 3400, 3600 Series: AMD has today announced the ATI Radeon HD 3400 and 3600 series graphics processors, which are the budget-minded siblings to the Radeon HD 3850 and 3870. The graphics cards currently now shipping in these series are the HD 3450, HD 3470, and HD 3650. When the Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 were introduced, there wasn't same-day Linux support but it had arrived both in open and closed-source forms relatively quickly, but is that the same story for these lower-end solutions? Will the DisplayPort interface on these graphics cards be supported under Linux? In this article, we have answers to these questions.

RadeonHD Mobility R500 & R600 Fixes: Luc Verhaegen of Novell has pushed additional PLL fixes into the xf86-video-radeonhd git tree. These PLL fixes should address all outstanding issues involving the setup and generation code, including the monitor not syncing and horizontal steadiness. Specifically, Mobility Radeon X1000 "R500" and all Radeon HD 2000 "R600" owners are encouraged to try the latest code and reporting the results to the RadeonHD mailing list...

AMD Radeon HD 2000 Series & Linux: Since January of this year we have been telling you that AMD has been silently working on R600 (Radeon HD 2000) support for their proprietary Linux "fglrx" driver. However, for the end-user the support isn't complete and still equates to being useless.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ & Sempron 3400+: After having presented our preview of the AMD Socket AM2 last week, today we finally have our first set of numbers ready to publish. Our first Linux AM2 performance report comes in way of the AMD Sempron 3400+ and AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+.
