Linux Information

First Came VGA Switcheroo, Now Comes ASUS Switcheroo

phoronix.com: Last February there was the first bits of hybrid graphics support under Linux when Red Hat's David Airlie began working on what he called "vga_switcheroo." The vga_switcheroo support allowed switching between multiple graphics processors -- primarily for notebooks -- by issuing a few commands and restarting the X Server.

ASUS Eee PC 1201N Netbook On Linux Update

phoronix.com: My sabbatical with Windows is coming to an end next week, but during the past three weeks I have been using the brand-new ASUS Eee PC 1201N exclusively. This ASUS netbook that packs an Intel Atom 330 dual-core processor, NVIDIA ION graphics, a nice 12" display that runs at 1366 x 768, and 2GB of RAM has been working out quite well.

ASUS Eee PC 1201N On Linux

phoronix.com: For the past year my netbook of choice has been the Samsung NC10 as while it shipped with stock Intel Atom hardware like other netbooks such as the Dell Mini 9 and earlier ASUS Eee PCs, the Samsung was built very well and possessed a rather large and well laid out keyboard for only being a 10.6" mobile computer.

ASUS Eee Top Fails With Linux

phoronix.com: ASUS is among the few tier-one hardware vendors that understands Linux. Of the dozens of ASUS products we have tested over the years, it is hard to remember a product from ASUS that did not work well with Linux. ASUS was even the first motherboard vendor to ship with an embedded instant-on Linux environment known as SplashTop and they continued their adoption of this lightweight Linux desktop with their notebooks and a massive number of motherboards.

Phoenix Strikes HyperSpace Deal With ASUS

phoronix.com: ASUS was the first company to ship SplashTop, an embedded instant-on Linux environment, on any of its products. They began by offering SplashTop on select ASUS motherboards, then it turned into ASUS notebooks, and then to many more ASUS products. However, Phoenix Technologies has now wooed ASUS into shipping HyperSpace on their notebooks...

ASUS Eee PC 901 / Intel Atom: Linux Distribution Comparison

phoronix.com: Late last month we published our preview of the ASUS Eee PC 901 and we shared our plans for a number of benchmarks using this netbook with Intel's Atom processor. Following our Linux desktop encryption benchmarks of the ASUS Eee PC 901 and Intel Atom N270 CPU we have a performance comparison of Xandros, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Mandriva on this low-cost netbook PC.

ASUS Releases Eee PC 901, 1000, 1000H

phoronix.com: This morning ASUS has announced the expansion of their Eee PC family with the introduction of three new models. These three new models use Intel's Atom processor, which makes them the first Netbooks. In addition to sporting an Atom processor, the 901 and 1000 use Solid-State Disks (SSDs), 1GB of DDR2 memory (or up to 2GB with the 1000/1000H models), and a battery life of nearly eight hours.

ASUS Massively Expands SplashTop Boards

phoronix.com: ASUS has announced today that they have expanded their selection of SplashTop-enabled motherboards by four with the introduction of the ASUS P5Q motherboard family. In addition, it has been announced by ASUS that they plan to roll-out SplashTop on their "entire motherboard product portfolio, starting with over one million motherboards per month." Congratulations to the DeviceVM folks and the Linux community with this being a major win.

SplashTop Running On ASUS Notebook

phoronix.com: DeviceVM's SplashTop, a product we had named as one of the greatest Linux innovations in 2007, is sharing a booth this week at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) with ASUS. At their booth we were allowed to check out a SplashTop demo running on an ASUS notebook! This notebook has yet to be introduced by ASUS, but it's intended for high-end gaming and comes with SplashTop Linux as a complementary operating system.

ASUS Expands SplashTop Mobo Selection

phoronix.com: DeviceVM and ASUS are today announcing that they have expanded their selection of motherboards that ship with SplashTop (a.k.a. "Express Gate") technology. We've been enthralled by SplashTop, an embedded instant-on Linux desktop environment, since we had first looked at this technology on the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard.

ASUS P5K-E WiFi vs. Gigabyte P35-DS4

phoronix.com: While all of the rage recently has been around Intel's X38 Express Chipset, there is still plenty of life left in Intel's P35 "Bearlake" Chipset. The Intel P35 is only a few months older, but it contains most of the same features as the flagship X38 aside from the PCI Express 2.0 support and a Hardware Memory Prefetcher.

New ASUS "Instant-On Linux" Details

phoronix.com: Following our ASUS Motherboard Ships With Embedded Linux, Web Browser article, ASUS has released a series of slides to Phoronix containing additional information about their "Express Gate" functionality...
